Where do these cost numbers come from?
They're US national averages cross-referenced from HomeAdvisor, Angi, Thumbtack, and Bob Vila, reconciled against recent (2025–2026) pro quote data. We regenerate them periodically to track material and labor inflation.
How do the regional multipliers work?
Labor is what varies most by region; materials are roughly flat nationally. Low-cost regions (Midwest, rural South) multiply pro cost by 0.8x. National average is 1.0x. HCOL metros (NYC, SF Bay, Seattle, LA, Boston, DC) multiply by 1.35x. DIY cost is unchanged; materials cost roughly the same everywhere.
Why is there a materials-vs-labor split?
Because it's the single most useful piece of data for deciding DIY vs. hire. If 70% of the pro cost is labor, DIY saves a lot. If 70% is materials, DIY savings are smaller and may not be worth the risk.
Should I always get multiple quotes?
Always three, not two. Two quotes leaves you guessing which is off; three gives you a triangle. The cheapest is often cutting corners, the most expensive is often padding, the middle is usually honest. If all three come in wildly different, something's off about the scope of work. Clarify it before hiring.
Why is DIY cost sometimes listed as $0?
For repairs that legally require a licensed professional (gas work, main panel changes, refrigerant recharge, full roof replacements). DIY isn't just discouraged; it's illegal or uninsurable in most cases.
Does the pro cost include permits?
Usually yes; reputable pros pull their own permits and include the fee in the quote. If a pro tells you 'no permit needed' on work that obviously requires one (new circuits, gas line, structural), find a different pro. Unpermitted work will haunt you at resale.
